3rd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment
Died on Friday, 22nd November 1918

William Robert Norman was born in Soham (Newmarket Q4-1890 3B:481) son of Cooper and Ann NORMAN (née SPARKS).

1891 census...Aged 7 months, he was at St John's Square, Soham with his father Cooper NORMAN [20] a miller; his mother Ann [23] and brother George A.[2]. and his grandfather, widower George SPARKS [59] a miller. All were born in Soham.

1901 census...Aged 10 he was at Waterside, Soham with his parents, brother George A {farm labourer) and sister Lily A. [10 months] born Soham.

1911 census... Aged 20, an engine driver, he was at Mill House, Soham with his parents and brother George Alfred and wife Susannah Grace WHYBROW [25] born Ely and their daughters Mildred Annie [2] and Dorothy May [1] both born in Soham.

In 1911 (Newmarket Q4-1911 3B:1261) he married Susan Hannah FULLER [18-9-1889]. Her address after his death was Paddock Street, Soham. They had two daughters, Dorothy Stella Mary [25-9-1912], and Lilian Annie [14-1-1917]. At probate the address was Waterside Cottage, Soham

He enlisted in Newmarket.
In the absence of his Army records it is not possible to determine how he came to die in England, or from what cause. His medal index card has not been found which probably means no overseas service. In fact he only served from 17th July 1918 to his death, perhaps a reserved occupation kept him out of the Army at first.
The 3rd (Reserve) Battalion did not serve abroad, it moved to Sheppey in May 1918 where it remained as part of the Thames & Medway Garrison. He died in the Military Hospital in Sheerness

William Norman is buried in Soham Cemetery, grave E:140
